Japanese hirajiro castle by arnsteio
How’s this for a first-time contribution to Thingiverse? Arnsteio’s first design shared on Thingiverse is this incredibly intricate and detailed Japanese hirajiro castle.
This is a small Japanese “hirajiro” plains castle from the sengoku period. Bases were simply made of earth so for the castle to survive the vagaries of weather and earth quakes, superstructures had to be light. Hence we see simple walls, small houses and open-work towers. It is meant for use when wargaming, and will be suitable for campaigns in Japan in the 1400s and 1500s – I will use it for the Kawanakajima campaigns.
Awesome work arnsteio! Please keep the models coming!

The Replicator Stop Motion Music Video
We’ve been up to all kinds of fun at MakerBot these days – announcing The Makerbot Replicator, revealing an all new version of Thingiverse, killing it at CES. And now I’m pleased to have the honor of dropping one more awesome bomb on your day – this video!
This all new stop-animation music video was made with Michael Curry’s playset characters and a number of other MakerBot-made pieces! The princesses story was written by MakerBot CEO and co-founder Bre Pettis and the song was written and performed by local Brooklyn musicians Scary Car (Bryan Scary and Giulio Carmassi). It’s fun, it’s catchy, and incredibly awesome!

Castle Block Playset by tc_fea
I love all of the modular playsets on Thingiverse. Right now you have your choice of dungeons, cathedrals, cubical farms, and stone houses from an imaginary land. Well, now you have even more options – Thingiverse citizen tc_fea has done it again with this very cool modular castle play set. I am pretty sure I could lose an entire day to printing and playing with such a set. How cool would it be to have a sack full of these pieces to build a giant sprawling castle?
And, once built, you are basically obligated to print a few siege weapons…1 … or maybe a few dragons?
- Though, seriously, where the heck are all the trebuchets?!

Carmiac Bot Bling Design Challenge Winner!
Thingiverse citizen Carmiac recently put together a “Bot Bling challenge.” The winner was to receive $35.00 from Carmiac himself and MakerBot kicking in some LED’s! The challenge recently concluded with the winner, Renosis for his “Castle MakerBot.” From Carmiac:
Congratulations to Thingiverse user Renosis for winning the BotBling Challenge! His Castle MakerBot entry has everything, great design, complete files, options galore, and over the top awesomeness. The only thing missing is a moat!
Big thanks and kudos to all the entrants, and stay tuned for my next challenge!
Renosis’ “Castle MakerBot” entry includes:
- Four turrets
- Coat of arms, with 7 different logos in three different positions
- MakerBot logo
- Thing-O-Matic
- Cupcake
- Unicorn
- RepRap
- RepRap logo
- Open Source Hardware logo
- Medieval torches
- Stained glass window
- Gen4 Interfacenumeric keypad firmware hack
- Runic keypad labels
He even included all the source files for his work. These included a PDF of the keypad labels, DXF files for some of the logos, Sketchup files for stained glass window, and OpenSCAD files for everything else. If you’ve ever needed to turn a MakerBot into a castle, this is hands down the only way to go.

Cube Farm Playset: Make a Model of Where You Model?
I have been enjoying MakerBot Operator tc_fea‘s models up on Thingiverse for a long while. We have featured Tony Cervantes’ pine tree and miniature castle projects here on the MakerBot blog — and his truss bridge kit, outhouse, flower, and his and hers toilets are among my favorite models up on Thingiverse. Tony brings humor and impressive modeling chops to the recreation of everyday elements of modern domestic life (well, in a wide range of centuries).
And now with his Cube Farm Playset he introduces a challenge — can you model the environment where you model and share it with everyone on Thingiverse?
Tony specifically requests that you create more cube farm stations to add to his kit (tag your model in Thingiverse with “cube farm“), but I’d bet he wouldn’t mind if you recreated (to his scale) the home office, backyard hutch, or the secret underground laboratory where you work so that your workstation can be printed out and arranged into Dilbertian cubicle labyrinths by the future middle manager of the world.
I think his challenge is a very good one — and might well be the solid CAD analog to the many self-portraits an apprentice visual artist makes on his or her way to mastering the tools and eyes to create later original work. Stop what you are doing right now and look around you — can you model where you are working and share it with us?
If you decide to create something for this project, please add the tag: cube_farm so that we can find it and add it to our cube farm playset. I provided some dimensioned pictures for those who do not use Google Sketchup.
I sorta plan to eventually add things like: computer monitor, keyboard, chair, wall clips etc. Or maybe I will add a laser cannon to zap noisy co-workers.
For a bit more fun add a little chain to hold down the seat on "her" toilet.
Yes, I took the picture backwards, his is on right.
The .mac files create the geometry in ANSYS classic.
Pine tree 2 has a more random look and has 5 mm vertical spacing between branches.
Pine tree 4 has fuller look and has 2.5 mm vertical spacing between branches.
This is a modular kit of parts to create a truss bridge. The sample shown has two center sections. The bridge can be made longer by adding more center sections and more piers if needed.
The parts list is shown for a two center section bridge.
file: assembly_110227h.skp shows the assembled orientation of the bridge.
file: bridge_4_110302.skp presents the parts in the printed orientation.

Serendipity
About ten months ago there was an amazing bunch of modular sets uploaded to Thingiverse:
- Dungeon Tiles for Miniatures Gaming by Telvin_3d
- Improved Dungeon Parts by TheRooster1
- Dungeon tiles by scottmac
- Modular Dungeon Walls by zxqueb
- And, last, but certainly not least the ever popular Gothic Cathedral Play Set by Skimbal
I was reminded of these awesome sets when I saw the “Miniature Castle” by tc_fea and the “Mew Mew Modular Desk Tidy System” by brendandawes a week ago. Each of these models is pretty awesome in its own right, but as soon as I saw these two models I started wishing for a mashup. 2 3 Back in October I wondered at the lack of more modular playsets, specifically castle themed ones.
I think it would be pretty easy to chop up the various wall sections, towers, turrets, gate entrance, and living areas of this castle into separate sections. Brendandawes’ connection system for his desk tidy system almost seem tailor made for connecting a modular building set such as tc_fea’s nifty design. Add to this that both designs were uploaded to Thingiverse on the same weekend?
Can you imagine how cool it would be to set up a sprawling medieval city across your coffee table?!4
The system allows you to combine the hexagon based Mew Mew in different ways; each Honey Pot slides together simply and easily.
- A self-described improvement over the Modular Dungeon Walls by TheRooster
- In fact, this would be a pretty cool recurring challenge – to mashup any two models uploaded in a single day.
- Who doesn’t love a good mashup challenge?
- Pardon my drool.
Maybe Soup is currently being updated? I'll try again automatically in a few seconds...
